ISKCON Devotees — Who They Are, How They Practise, How They Marry
An introduction to devotee life in the Hare Krishna movement — practice, community, terminology — and what devotees look for in marriage.
This website is for ISKCON Hare Krishna devotees who are seeking Krishna conscious marriages.
ISKCON devotees are practitioners of bhakti-yoga within the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, founded in 1966 by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda. They belong to the Gauḍīya Vaishnava tradition, which worships Krishna as the Supreme Person and takes the chanting of His holy names as the central practice of this age.
Devotees are not a uniform group. Some live in temples as brahmacārīs or sannyāsīs; far more are householders with ordinary jobs who maintain their practice at home and serve their local temple on weekends. Some are formally initiated; many are aspiring. Understanding these distinctions matters, particularly in the context of marriage.
This page explains devotee practice and vocabulary plainly, and then looks at how devotees approach marriage within the community.
Japa and kirtan
Initiated devotees chant sixteen rounds of the Hare Krishna mahā-mantra daily on beads; congregational kirtan is the community's shared practice.
Four regulative principles
No meat, fish or eggs; no intoxicants; no gambling; no illicit sex — the ethical foundation of devotee life.
Temple community
Devotees are connected with a temple where they attend maṅgala-ārati, hear class, take prasādam and perform service.
Prasādam and deity worship
Food is offered to Krishna before eating, and the Deities in the temple are served as the living centre of the community.
Daily practice: what a devotee's day looks like
A committed devotee's day begins early, often before four, with a bath, maṅgala-ārati and japa — the quiet chanting of the mahā-mantra on tulasī beads, counted in rounds of one hundred and eight. Sixteen rounds is the standard accepted at initiation and takes roughly two hours. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam class follows, then work or study, with cooked-and-offered prasādam at home and temple attendance in the evening or at weekends.
Householders adapt this to their circumstances. A devotee working long hours in a city may chant on the commute and attend temple only on Sundays; that is normal and accepted. What devotees generally do not compromise on is the vegetarian diet, the offering of food, and some fixed daily chanting.
Initiation, aspiring devotees and terminology
Devotees describe their standing in terms outsiders find unfamiliar. An aspiring devotee practises and attends temple without formal initiation. Harināma initiation is the first initiation, at which the devotee accepts a spiritual master, receives a spiritual name and vows to chant sixteen rounds and follow the four principles. Brāhmaṇa or second initiation follows later and permits deity worship and the performance of yajña.
Other terms you will meet on devotee profiles: sādhana (daily spiritual practice), seva (service), prabhu and mātājī (respectful address for men and women), grihastha (householder), and the name of the initiating guru, which places the devotee within a particular line of guidance.
The community: temples in India and abroad
ISKCON has hundreds of temples worldwide. In India the largest congregations centre on Vrindavan, Mayapur, Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Ahmedabad; abroad, substantial devotee communities exist across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Europe, the Gulf and South Africa.
Devotee social life is organised around these temples — festivals such as Janmāṣṭamī and Gaura Pūrṇimā, Sunday feasts, book distribution, harināma, bhakti-vṛkṣa study groups and youth programmes. When two devotee families evaluate a marriage proposal, the temple each side is connected with is usually the first reference point.
How ISKCON devotees approach marriage
Devotees marry to enter grihastha-āśrama as a form of service: to keep their sādhana intact, raise Krishna conscious children, and support each other's devotional life. Compatibility is therefore assessed on practice — chanting, principles, initiation status, temple service, diet — before the conventional criteria of caste, income or horoscope.
Matches typically arise through the temple congregation, through a senior devotee or marriage counsellor, or through a devotee matrimony platform. General matrimonial portals serve devotees badly because they reduce Krishna consciousness to a religion checkbox and cannot express any of the details above.
YugalMilan was built by practising devotees to record exactly those details. Every profile is OTP-verified, live-selfie checked and manually approved, and carries the devotee's rounds, initiation status, initiating guru, temple connection and service. The public directory can be browsed free before you register.
Meeting devotees if you are new to the movement
If you are drawn to Krishna consciousness but not yet connected, the ordinary route is to visit your nearest temple, attend a Sunday programme, take prasādam, read Srila Prabhupāda's books — Bhagavad-gītā As It Is is the usual starting point — and join a local study group. Practice, and the community, follow from there.
Devotee families generally welcome sincere newcomers, and a number of members on YugalMilan came to Krishna consciousness as adults rather than being raised in it.

Frequently asked questions
Who are ISKCON devotees?
They are practitioners of Gauḍīya Vaishnava bhakti-yoga within the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, founded by Srila Prabhupāda in 1966. They chant the Hare Krishna mahā-mantra daily, follow four regulative principles, eat only food offered to Krishna, and serve a local temple community.
What are the four regulative principles?
No meat, fish or eggs; no intoxicants including tobacco, alcohol, tea and coffee; no gambling; and no illicit sex. Initiated devotees vow to follow all four.
How many rounds do devotees chant?
Sixteen rounds of the mahā-mantra on japa beads daily is the standard accepted at harināma initiation — about two hours. Aspiring devotees often build up gradually from a smaller number.
Do all ISKCON devotees live in temples?
No. The great majority are householders with ordinary jobs who practise at home and serve their local temple, while a smaller number of brahmacārīs, brahmacāriṇīs and sannyāsīs live in temple āśramas.
How do ISKCON devotees find a life partner?
Usually through the temple congregation, a senior devotee or marriage counsellor, or a devotee matrimony platform. Compatibility is judged on sādhana, initiation status, temple connection and family agreement rather than caste or income alone.
Can someone new to Krishna consciousness join a devotee matrimony platform?
Yes. Sincere aspiring devotees are welcome on YugalMilan; the profile records your actual standard of practice so both sides start from an honest picture.
