ISKCON Marriage Guidelines — What Devotees and Families Should Know
The customs and cautions that experienced devotees and marriage counsellors pass on — collected in one place for devotees and their families.
This website is for ISKCON Hare Krishna devotees who are seeking Krishna conscious marriages.
There is no single rulebook for marriage within the Hare Krishna movement, but there is a well-established body of practice: what senior devotees advise, what counsellors ask, what families check, and what devotees are cautioned against. These guidelines are drawn from that practice.
None of what follows is an official ISKCON regulation, and individual temples and counsellors differ in emphasis. Treat it as the collected experience of devotees who have helped many marriages succeed — and seen some struggle.
Readiness before searching
Steady chanting, the four regulative principles and honest self-assessment come before looking for a partner.
Involve elders early
Families and a temple authority or counsellor should know about a match from the beginning, not after it is decided.
Verify, don't assume
Devotee standing, service history and family situation should be confirmed through references, not taken on trust.
Marriage is service
Grihastha life is undertaken to protect and advance both partners' devotional lives, not to satisfy sense enjoyment.
Guideline 1 — Assess your readiness honestly
Counsellors consistently advise devotees to enter grihastha life only when their sādhana is stable, their livelihood is reasonably settled, and they understand the responsibilities involved. A marriage entered to solve loneliness or family pressure, without any capacity to maintain a household, places both devotees' spiritual lives at risk.
Be exact about your practice when describing yourself: rounds actually chanted daily rather than intended, principles actually followed, and service actually performed. Overstating your standard almost always surfaces within a few months of marriage.
Guideline 2 — Keep the temple and counsellors involved
Ask a senior devotee, temple counsellor or temple authority to be aware of the match and to advise both sides. Their role is to confirm devotee standing, to raise concerns the families may miss, and to mediate if a disagreement arises later.
Where a couple has no counsellor of their own, a devotee marriage counsellor can be requested. On YugalMilan this support is built into the Advance Premium membership.
Guideline 3 — Establish the questions before the emotions
Settle the substantive matters early: standard of chanting and principles; initiation status and initiating guru; the temple each devotee is connected with and the service performed; whether the household will be temple-centred or congregational; where the couple will live and with whom; whether both will earn; expectations about children and their education; the family's support for the marriage; and any health, financial or legal matters that must be disclosed.
Experienced counsellors say most marital difficulty traces back to one of these being left vague out of politeness during the introduction period.
Guideline 4 — Observe Vaishnava etiquette while meeting
Meet openly — at a temple, in a public place, or with a family member or senior devotee aware of the meeting. Avoid prolonged private correspondence before the families are involved. Keep interactions respectful and purposeful, remembering that both devotees continue to live within a small community whose good opinion protects them.
Platforms should support this rather than undermine it. YugalMilan opens messaging only after both devotees accept an interest, hides phone numbers by default, and restricts photographs to verified members.
Guideline 5 — Verify what you are told
Confirm the temple connection, ask for references from devotees who know the family, and be cautious with anyone reluctant to involve their own community. Genuine devotees generally welcome references, because the same protection works in their favour.
On a matrimony platform, look for real verification rather than volume: OTP-verified mobile numbers, a live selfie captured at the time of profile completion, and manual admin approval of every profile.
Guideline 6 — Keep the wedding simple and scriptural
The Vaishnava wedding is a vivāha-yajña performed before the Deities and the assembled devotees, with kirtan and prasādam distribution. Srila Prabhupāda repeatedly instructed householders to avoid extravagance; a simple ceremony well attended by devotees carries more weight in the community than an expensive one.
Arrange the ceremony through your temple where possible, so that the marriage is witnessed and recorded within the community both devotees belong to.
Guideline 7 — Plan the first years deliberately
Agree in advance on daily sādhana as a couple, temple attendance, service commitments, budgeting, and how disagreements will be resolved and with whose help. Grihastha life is easier to protect when these are decided while goodwill is high rather than during the first conflict.
Our grihastha training and marriage counselling pages go into these preparations in more depth.

Frequently asked questions
Are there official ISKCON marriage rules?
ISKCON does not publish a single universal marriage rulebook. Temples and counsellors follow a well-established body of practice concerning readiness, family involvement, Vaishnava etiquette and the vivāha-yajña ceremony. Devotees should consult their own temple authorities alongside general guidance like this page.
At what age do devotees usually marry?
There is no prescribed age. Counsellors focus on readiness rather than age: stable chanting, adherence to the regulative principles, a workable livelihood, and understanding of household responsibilities.
Do both partners need to be initiated?
No. Many successful devotee marriages involve aspiring or uninitiated devotees who practise sincerely. What families look for is a steady standard of practice and agreement about the household's spiritual direction.
Should families compare horoscopes?
Some devotee families do, and many treat it as secondary to spiritual standing and character. It is a family decision rather than a requirement of the tradition as practised in ISKCON.
What if a difficulty arises after marriage?
Devotees are advised to approach a marriage counsellor or senior devotee known to both partners rather than allowing the matter to escalate privately. This is a principal reason for involving a counsellor from the beginning.
